Mark Hamill Says Luke Skywalker Even Changed Between The Force Awakens And The Last Jedi
The Star Wars franchise is in an interesting place right now. With Disney and Lucasfilm going full speed ahead with a ton of projects, the property had drifted from the control of creator and visionary George Lucas. Plenty of directors are getting their hands on the galaxy far, far away, and are therefore able to change the canon forever. This seems to have happened when Rian Johnson was handed the franchise in The Last Jedi, killing off characters and changing them at their core in the process. The most obvious example of this is Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker, who was a dark and jaded former hero. Now Hamill has revealed another way Luke changed during the process, going back to his brief scene in The Force Awakens. As the actor tells it, Abrams was originally going to make that final shot a showing of Luke's power, which would have likely translated into The Last Jedi.
J.J. said, 'Oh and by the way I'll probably put in a couple of floating boulders to show the Force emanating from you, as strong as it is.' So I'm thinking for VIII, I'm going to have Force Lightning coming out of every orifice of my body. You know, lifting an eyebrow and toppling AT-ATs like dominoes. That would have been fun to be that powerful! Plus, I wouldn't have to do much. They wouldn't have to teach me choreography to do lightsaber duels. I'd just have to do this [points] and let the special effects guy do everything.
It looks like Mark Hamill is not only ready to return for Episode IX, but hoping that J.J. Abrams gives him the Force Powers he'd originally wanted. That, or give Luke the ability to take down Imperial vehicles with the flick of the wrist.
Mark Hamill's comments to IGN show how live things really are in the development of each new Star Wars movie. While J.J. Abrams created a new set of characters and an overall narrative arc, he also had to let go when it came to The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson drastically changed Luke Skywalker, throwing Abrams' intentions out as easily as Luke chucked his lightsaber behind his back during his first scene.
But Colin Trevorrow's departure from Episode IX made room for J.J. Abrams to return to the director's chair, and complete the trilogy he began. As such, Mark Hamill is hoping that he'll pop up, and have the increased Force Powers that Abrams originally envisioned. Force Projection is cool and all, but it would be great to see a more significant demonstration of Luke's fully developed abilities. We've been waiting since A New Hope for him to be a full fledged Jedi Master.
