Horror Movies Are Still Pushing Boundaries And Trying New Things, Even If Most Blockbusters Arent

This past weekend, A Quiet Place debuted in theaters, smashing expectations and claiming the second highest three-day opening of the year. The horror film enjoyed a healthy amount of buzz since its premiere at SXSW and rode into the weekend with major critical acclaim. John Kraskinski's film is a masterclass in tension, and the kind of movie that demands to be seen in theaters, provided the audience has proper theater etiquette of course. This bona fide horror hit may have seemed like an anomaly less than a decade ago, but A Quiet Place is just the latest in the genre to land in a critical and commercial sweet spot in the last couple of years as a part of the ongoing horror renaissance.

After watching A Quiet Place and seeing the audience engagement with the film over the weekend, I began to think about why this movie hit in the way it did and what is really driving this new wave of modern horror classics. After all, the horror genre never went away, but we are now seeing horror capture the zeitgeist and critical recognition in a way it hasn't in ages. The conclusion that I came to is that horror movies are pushing boundaries, telling new stories in new ways and that it is this originality that audiences are craving in an age where we are bombarded with by-the-book studio films on a near-weekly basis.

Full disclosure upfront, I'm not traditionally a horror guy. I don't dislike horror movies, but I've never sought them out. I often found them to be not very good films, relying too much on gore and shock value versus actually telling a compelling and scary story. Although, of late, I find myself intrigued by the quality horror films out there that have something to say, and do so in an original way. There are obvious exceptions, of course, and the independent scene is always pushing the envelope, but in terms of wide-release movies that the average person can see at their local theater, nothing matches the fearlessness of filmmaking taking place in the horror genre at the moment.

On paper, the premise of A Quiet Place doesn't sound especially remarkable. Where A Quiet Place succeeds and breaks ground is in form and execution. John Krasinski's movie provides a theatergoing experience unlike any other. A Quiet Place is far more than a monster movie. There is no exposition, no voiceover narrative to establish the world for you and tell you what's going on. As an audience member, you are challenged to pay attention because this film will not wait for you. It's so unlike what else is out there that it was even difficult to market the movie. This is practically a silent film, where the actors need to communicate and convey emotion without the benefit of pages and pages of dialogue. This wide-release movie asks audiences to (gasp!) read subtitles as its actors primarily use sign language to communicate. And it tackles the struggles of parenthood, all while scaring you out of your seat. That movie made $50 million last weekend. That's incredible.

A Quiet Place is just the latest chapter in a horror renaissance that is pushing boundaries and trying new things. Just last year, Jordan Peele burst onto the scene with his Academy Award-winning film Get Out. Much like A Quiet Place, Get Out felt fresh and new and original. Heck, it even revived a sub-genre: the social thriller. Get Out thrilled, entertained and even made us laugh, while telling a unique story that people hadn't seen before and one that served as a brilliant metaphor for real societal issues. The Witch, It Follows, Don't Breathe, The Babadook, Raw, the list goes on with recent horror films that have upped the quality of the genre by trying new things in terms of form, content and message.

If we consider the studio landscape at present what do we see: an endless string of franchise starters, cinematic universe hopefuls, reboots, remakes, sequels and all manner of half-animated explosion-fests that rarely stand out from the crowd. The critical and/or box office disappointments of recent years, movies like The Mummy, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales are all examples of a blockbuster landscape that feels stale. If you look at all the big movies heading to theaters, how many truly stand out? It's amazing how so many different movies can all look and feel the same.

You may be entertained by the latest blockbuster, but how often do they surprise and challenge you? How much space does it take up in your mind, or do you stop thinking about it not long after you leave the theater? Many studio movies these days are simply safe, rote, paint-by-numbers affairs that might entertain but fail to engage or inspire. That is why there is often such a backlash against reboots and remakes, with audiences wondering aloud if Hollywood has run out of ideas.

Now it would be disingenuous to not acknowledge the business realities of the industry that contribute to this. The horror genre has always had films that have succeeded financially simply by the luxury of budgets so low that just a passing curiosity from audiences will cover them at the box office. Yet recently, studios like Blumhouse have been at the forefront of low-budget horror that not only delivers financially, but also elevates the quality we expect from the genre. Low-budget films can take chances because they can afford to. With so little money to recoup, the risk is relatively small. With each zero added to a film's budget, the financial risk increases exponentially. Accordingly, the reins on a film's originality are tightened to compensate, not allowing the carriage to go in new directions for fear it will fall off a cliff. That is why returning to tried and true properties and modes of storytelling is so common. It is the safest option.

The studio blockbuster landscape isn't entirely devoid of originality and innovation. A film like Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets tried to do something weird and new, but failed spectacularly, proving that originality sometimes isn't enough. Logan was an incredible character study that took a grounded approach to a superhero blockbuster. Star Wars: The Last Jedi set off a fandom civil war because of its bold storytelling and the way it tried new things even within an established franchise. And Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk was practically an experimental film in terms of structure. So the major studios can clearly put out films, even blockbusters, that are original and that try new things. But they are the anomalies.

Perhaps it is the absence of the mid-budget film and true diversity in the marketplace that has horror genre so hot right now. Whatever it is, horror is pushing boundaries and trying novel ideas in creative ways unlike most studio blockbuster films. If you're a film fan who has always ignored horror, you owe it to yourself to try something new and give films like A Quiet Place the chance to scare you.

5 Awesome Disney Rides That Absolutely Need Their Own Movies

5 Awesome Disney Rides That Absolutely Need Their Own Movies

The Disney parks have always featured rides based on the beloved films from the storied animation studio and as time has gone on corporate synergy has seen rides based on movies become the default over original concepts. Yet in 2002, Disney chose to take things in the opposite direction, using one of its rides not based on a Disney film as inspiration for one. That film was The Country Bears.

That didn't work out so well, but a year later Disney took an even more famous ride and made Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Five films and over $4.5 billion dollars later that decision looks like a wise one. The link between the Pirates of the Caribbean films and rides has become a symbiotic one as well, with Jack Sparrow and other movie elements showing up in the park attractions.

Disney has had a few misfires when it comes to ride-to-theatrical film adaptations at both Disney World and Disneyland, but the House of Mouse is hoping that lightning strikes again with 2020's Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Disney is also apparently rebooting the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

The Pirates reboot is a good idea and I'm all for more pirate movies, but Disney is already rebooting a property based on a ride that had recent movies when it still has plenty of other rides with untapped cinematic potential. Here are five awesome Disney rides that actually need movies.

Expedition Everest - Legend Of The Forbidden MountainPart of what sets Disney World rides apart from your standard amusement park fare is that they really try and tell a story. From the moment you get in line to the point when you exit through the gift shop, everything you see, hear and touch serves to immerse you in a narrative that enhances the ride experience. In few places is this better exemplified than Animal Kingdom's Expedition Everest.

The queue takes guests from a travel agency, to a temple, to a Yeti museum all on their journey to climb Mount Everest, where they meet the mythical Abominable Snowman. All the while you feel a sense of wonder and mystery as your rational mind succumbs to your spiritual surroundings and opens itself up to the possibility that the Yeti is real. The bones of the story are already there in the ride; Disney just needs to flesh this story out for an adventure film.

What It Could Be About: The story could follow a group, perhaps even a family of mountaineers, seeking adventure on the world's highest peak, who discover that avalanches, crevasse falls and exhaustion are not the only things you need to fear when exploring the wilder parts of the world.

The Enchanted Tiki RoomThe Enchanted Tiki Room is the very first audio-animatronics show and one of Disney Park's most enduring attractions. Adventureland's musical show features a cast of tropical birds, colorful singing flowers and the mystical and powerful Tiki gods. The only potential pitfall with an Enchanted Tiki Room movie is its story could end up being close-ish to Disney's own Moana.

What It Could Be About: Disney could do a couple of things to differentiate The Enchanted Tiki Room movie. One could be to do this movie in the live action realm. The Jungle Book has already shown how photo-realistic animals can still be made to talk in a "live action" setting and that same method could be used for the birds of the Tiki Room.

The story could also be kept smaller and mostly confined to the Tiki Room itself, perhaps focusing on the macaws Jos, Michael, Pierre and Fritz, with their constant banter back and forth providing an endless source of comedy. The film could also see them welcoming a new member to join the tropical serenade. Give the movie some great songs, stunning visuals and fun characters and the Tiki birds can soar on the big screen.

Big Thunder Mountain RailroadOf all the rides on this list, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is perhaps the easiest see as a movie franchise. Basically Disney can just take the basic formula of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, in terms of tone and style, and just plug in cowboys instead of pirates and boom, you've got a franchise.

What It Could Be About: While not directly communicated at the parks, the story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is that in the late 19th century, gold was discovered on the titular mountain in the American Southwest, which gave rise to a mining town. But the land was sacred to the Native Americans and thus the gold was cursed. This led to natural disasters and the abandonment of the town. But the mine train was still cursed, running around the mountain through the night.

The Disney Kingdoms comic book sees the daughter of the greedy mine owner robbing her father's gold amid the natural disasters and a movie could take a similar approach, mixing the cowboy type elements with the supernatural. Interestingly a pilot for a Big Thunder Mountain TV series was once ordered at ABC but that never went to series.

MaelstromAn attraction we wish was still around is the lost and lamented Maelstrom. Once one of the only rides in EPCOT's World Showcase, the Maelstrom was swept away in Elsa's ice storm and Frozen Ever After now stands in its place in the Norway pavilion. This brilliant and quotable ("Disappear! Disappear!") longboat ride took guests on a journey to discover Norway, exploring its history, culture and folklore.

What It Could Be About: Viking stuff tends to skew young like How to Train Your Dragon or very mature like History's Vikings and I think there is a middle ground that a Maelstrom movie could slide into. I'd like to see a PG-13 Maelstrom movie featuring seafaring Vikings and huge trolls that maintains the fantastical and unbridled strangeness of the Maelstrom ride.

Trolls are part of Frozen but I'd like to see the larger trolls of Norwegian folklore realized onscreen on the scale Disney could achieve with modern special effects. Who doesn't love Vikings, and the blend of action-adventure, fantasy and comedy that made the Pirates of the Caribbean films such a success could work just as well for a Maelstrom movie.

Journey Into ImaginationEPCOT's Journey into Imagination features Figment, who is probably the most recognizable character in a Disney park that doesn't hail from one of the company's movies. Figment, as in the figment of your imagination, takes guests on a journey to discover all that their imagination is capable of.

Figment is a recognizable and popular character, making it somewhat surprising that he doesn't have a big screen movie already. Fortunately, our imaginations don't have to work too hard to think of how the orange and purple dragon can make the transition. A feature film could draw inspiration from the original Journey into imagination and the Figment Marvel comic series under the Disney Kingdoms line.

What It Could Be About: The original ride featured a character called the Dreamfinder and the comic book explores the Dreamfinder and Figments relationship in a steampunk fantasy set in 1910 London. The Dreamfinder is initially a student and an inventor who brings his childhood imaginary friend to life. Through a series of events the two wind up in an alternate dimension of fascinating colors, sights and sounds. Disney could really go wild with imagination with a Journey into Imagination movie featuring the popular Figment in a psychedelic world.

BONUS: The Haunted MansionThe first Haunted Mansion movie failed to capture the magic of its inspiration and was met with derision from critics and mostly apathy from moviegoers. Truthfully I'd like to see Disney take another crack at both The Haunted Mansion and Tomorrowland, but another Tomorrowland movie seems unlikely any time soon, if ever. A reboot based around The Haunted Mansion, however, seems inevitable.

The Haunted Mansion is a rich concept and one of Disney's most popular rides so the company needs to take a mulligan on this one and it has at times seemed like that's exactly what was going to happen. Guillermo del Toro has had his name attached to a Haunted Mansion reboot going all the way back to 2010 but it is unclear what is happening with the project at the moment.

What It Could Be About: Hopefully the Oscar-winner ultimately does make The Haunted Mansion because his sensibilities can deliver exactly what we want from a movie based on the Disney ride. The Haunted Mansion should be fun but also at least a little scary and weird and full of creepy creativity. It would also be served better as an action-adventure/horror film with comedic elements instead of leaning on the comedy as the first attempt did.

Will Doctor Strange 2 Start Filming This Year?

Will Doctor Strange 2 Start Filming This Year?

Marvel fans currently are in the dark when it comes to the slate of films planned beyond Avengers 4. Yes, we know that Spider-Man: Far From Home is being filmed as we speak, and there's supposed to be a third Guardians of the Galaxy movie (though, the behind-the-scenes shake up could lead to a delay). Still, there are educated guesses that MCU fans could make, and Doctor Strange 2 certainly would be one of those anticipated sequels. Which makes this cryptic Instagram post from Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson seem like a major tease:

The quote associated with the image of a praying Stephen Vincent Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a New Testament quote that belongs to Jesus Christ, speaking to his Father regarding his crucifixion and resurrection. Given the fact that Strange currently is a pile of dust, having sacrificed himself as part of Thanos' snap -- a move that we believe will eventually allow him to save many -- there's Biblical meaning behind the phrase.

But it's "See you in September" on Scott Derrickson's Instagram that really has caught our eye. Immediately, we assume that this means the start of production on Doctor Strange 2. (If it was anything else, why pair it with the comic image of Strange?) And, there are dates on the Marvel Studios calendar that would sync up with a possible Doctor Strange 2. As if right now, in 2020, Marvel has three dates with no proper titles -- May 1, July 31 and November 6. We believed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would take that May 1 slot. Does that mean Doctor Strange 2 will be July 31? Or might it move up and replace Guardians 3, as Marvel figures out who will direct that sequel?

Announcing any Marvel sequel creates complications in the wake of Avengers: Infinity War, as the heroes who need to carry those films are all dust at the moment. Spider-Man (Tom Holland), most of the Guardians, and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) all faded away following the Thanos snap, and until we know how Marvel plans to bring them back -- believe me, they are all coming back -- the sequels have to keep specific details under wraps.

But the original Doctor Strange did end with a tease that set up a confrontation with his one-time ally, Baron Mordo, who thinks there are "too many sorcerers" in the world:

We will find out, eventually, what Scott Derrickson meant when he said "See you in September" when posting a photo of Doctor Strange, praying. Is it resurrection, following the sacrifice made by Strange and his colleagues in the MCU? That's our best guess. What is yours?

“Not my will, but thine be done...” See you in September.
