William Shatner Responds To Chris Pines Star Trek Negotiations

The future of the Star Trek franchise is in question as Chris Pine has reportedly walked away from the negotiating table for the next movie in the series. While many Star Trek fans might not be too happy with this news, as it puts the popular film series in jeopardy, Chris Pine does have one notable supporter. The other Captain Kirk, William Shatner, thinks Pine is making the right call. According to Shatner...

Well, we negotiated. I don't recall, although there is something vaguely reminiscent about saying, 'I can't do that.' But, Chris is in a wonderful position in that he is so good and such a leading man, that he has many opportunities to explore without being Captain Kirk. So he is in a really good negotiating position. I think he's doing the right thing in terms of getting more money, as the movies seem to be making a lot of money.

While the new Star Trek movies have certainly been making a lot of money, they're also fairly expensive to make and the issue, at least according to the studio, is that the last one didn't make enough money. For that reason, Paramount was reportedly looking for both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth to take a pay cut. Neither appeared to be willing to do so, which has stalled talks on the next Star Trek movie.

While the franchise is clearly something that's important to William Shatner, he tells Trekmovie.com he believes that Chris Pine is making the right call. Shatner clearly sees all of this as negotiation, and he sees Pine in the best position. The young actor doesn't need Star Trek to be successful, so he's in a position where he can walk away. It's likely that the studio, however, needs Captain Kirk for the movie to be successful, so they may be more willing to give in.

And it's certainly true. Chris Pine has had no problem getting work that isn't related to Star Trek. He's got another blockbuster franchise with Wonder Woman and he's been involved in high profile films like Disney's A Wrinkle in Time as well as more subtle dramas like Hell or High Water and the upcoming Outlaw King. He clearly doesn't need Star Trek, the only real question is does Star Trek need him? If it does, then we'll likely see a deal get made here, though if the studio thinks Star Trek can move forward without him, we could be in for a very different future to the franchise.

Since it seems the studio was willing to kill Captain Kirk off-screen once, there's every reason to believe it would be willing to do it again. We'll just have to wait and see how this one comes out.

Marvel Is Reportedly Not Rushing To Bring The X-Men To The MCU

Since the Disney/Fox merger was finalized earlier this year, Marvel Studios obtained the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters. However, these new toys the MCU can now play with arent as shiny and new as they once were. Theyve been the center of some of the most disappointing entries to the comic book genre and are going to need some major touch-ups and facelifts.

Dark Phoenix leaves behind a depressing whimper for the long-running and once highly-successful X-Men franchise. The recent release just became the most disappointing X-Men movie with a $33 million opening weekend and brutal beating by critics. The movie is now likely facing over $100 million on losses. Its then no surprise Marvel Studios executives are shelving a reboot for the franchise... for now anyway. In one producers words:

There is no rush to bring the X-Men to the marketplace after this. And when they come back, its going to extend Marvels run another 10 years.

After audiences watched as Foxs X-Men franchise burst into flames, allowing time to let the dust settle is a good call for Marvel. But once it does, it looks like the studio will develop a full-blown franchise that will explore mutant stories for a decade, per THR.

So while it will be a few years from now at the very least before the X-Men join the ranks of the MCU, Marvel Chief Kevin Feige has previously shown his excitement to implement these additional riches of comic book characters to his highly-successful franchise. Check out what he said:

The specifics of what it means remains to be seen, but overall its wonderful and it feels like these characters have come home. It will be nice to have what every other [intellectual property] holder that I can think of has, which is access to all their IP. Imagine if Donald Duck was at another studio. Imagine if Goofy or Moana were someplace else and you didnt have access to them even though they are yours.

There could be something special about more of Marvel operating under the same umbrella. The Avengers and X-Men all under the same family. For it to pay off in a way that pleases fans, it will take some planning on the studios part.

Marvel already has Phase 4 under development to oversee, with movies including Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi, Black Panther 2, Doctor Strange 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 expected to be coming up-- which fills the calendar for the studio for years to come. Marvel is in a good place and it makes sense for the studio to let these other established and upcoming storylines play out before adding X-Men into the mix.

The movie follows 2017s X-Men: Apocalypse, which was also a disappointment for the franchise as it made $200 million less than 2014s Days of Future Past.

While X-Men fans will have to be patient, it looks like Disneys Marvel Studios sees great potential in rebooting the franchise when they do.

That Time Jason Momoa (Literally) Stood Up For Henry Cavill's Superman To A Hater

Part of the benefit of being on a team and having friends is that there's always somebody that will have your back when you need it. It's true in life and it's true on superhero teams like the Justice League. So when a fan had a problem with Henry Cavill's Superman, Jason Momoa had his teammate's back and the Aquaman actor (literally) stood up to the hater. Check it out:

I'm not sure what the audience member said about Henry Cavill's Superman, but Jason Momoa was having none of it. His whole reaction here is great as he interrupts the question being asked to ask a question of his own. It's so funny too, because even though his tone is calm, it's a question that puts the person on the spot to tell Aquaman why he doesn't like Superman.

In this Twitter video from Puerto Rico Comic-Con in 2015, we don't get to see the fan's response, but after the fans' 'ooooo' you get the sense that the person didn't know what to say. Then Jason Momoa literally stands up to confront the hater. I imagine seeing someone with the size and stature of Khal Drogo pop up and start walking towards you is rather intimidating and could leave you speechless.

Jason Momoa asking the fan if he's got a problem with "my boy" is a fun response to fan criticism. It is cool because Jason Momoa delivers a great moment for the crowd, and messes with the fan a bit, while leaning into his position as a friend of Henry Cavill and the future (at that time) Aquaman and Justice League member.

There are a wide range of opinions on Henry Cavill's Superman and his portrayal in Man of Steel. Some were enamored with Zack Synder's film and Cavill's portrayal and others...not so much, disliking his dourness and all that neck-snapping business. Of course, a lot has happened since Man of Steel, both for Henry Cavill's Superman and Jason Momoa's Aquaman.

Both actors were in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, but they may now be on different paths that could see them no longer sharing the screen battling supervillains. In September, we heard that Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck are done with their roles in the DCEU, a position that Jason Momoa would understand.

That still hasn't been confirmed, and Jason Momoa recently defended Henry Cavill once more, saying that he is not done as Superman. As for Jason Momoa, he is riding high in the DCEU right now. His first solo film Aquaman recently released in theaters and it is doing quite well for itself at the worldwide box office, already surpassing many of its DCEU stablemates, including Man of Steel and Justice League.
