Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights Will Bring In Two More Classic Horror Movies This Year

For fans of the horror genre, there's arguably no better time to go to a theme park than the Halloween season. Plenty of amusement parks have their own unique ways to celebrate the spookiest time of the year, but Universal Halloween Horror Nights has a uniquely-profound connection to the world of horror films. The theme park has long made a name for itself by bringing classic horror movies to life, and this year Universal Studios Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights celebration is going to bring Child's Play and Killer Klowns from Outer Space into the fold.

The first notable inclusion in Universal Studios Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights lineup -- which will kick off on September 14 and run through November 3 -- is the diminutive slasher made famous by Brad Dourif in Don Mancini's Child's Play franchise: Chucky. In a story called Revenge of Chucky, guests will navigate a cursed toy fair and find themselves pursued by evil child's playthings. And, of course, the scare zone will eventually bring audiences face-to-face with Chucky himself.

Then there's Killer Klowns from Outer Space, which has become widely-known by many die-hard horror fans as a quintessential B-movie romp from the 1980s. Taking a more sci-fi heavy approach to this story, the Killer Klowns from Outer Space scare zone will see Universal Studios Orlando guests attempt to escape from the alien klowns -- who carry ray guns that turn their victims into cotton candy.

If you thought Andy Muschietti's IT was scary, wait until you find yourself face to face with the klowns in this scare zone. They're not for the faint of heart.

Of course, Universal Studios Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights isn't just adapting classic films for this year's lineup of sinister scare zones. In addition to Revenge of Chucky and Kreepy Klowns from Outer Space, the seasonal event will also three other Halloween-themed stories called Vamp 85: New Year's Eve, Twisted Tradition and The Harvest.

Beyond the scare zones, Universal Studios Orlando will continue its tradition of putting guests side-by-side with all sorts of classic Halloween icons to craft ten different haunted house -- the most the park has ever created for a single season -- five scare zones, and a live show. The park has dug deep into the Universal library of spooky IP, and it will feature appearances by characters from properties like Stranger Things, Trick 'r Treat, and many others, while also including some original scares and monsters thrown in for good measure.

The inclusion of Child's Play and Killer Klowns from Outer Space in Universal's theme park lineup is only the latest example of how the company is using its extensive list of IPs to create compelling live experiences for fans at its theme parks. In fact, earlier this month we reported on the (decidedly less scary) development of the new DreamWorks Theatre at Universal Studios Hollywood, which features live entertainment inspired by the Kung Fu Panda franchise. There are a lot of theme parks out there, but Universal's particular offering seems notably perfect for the average moviegoer looking for a vacation.

This past weekend saw the release of a new Shazam! preview, and among the highlights was seeing the eponymous hero clashing with his arch-nemesis from the comics, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. Their fight is so literally electrically charged that when the two are shooting lightning at one another, a ferris wheel is falling in the background. Needless to say that Zachary Levi and Mark Strong conjuring electricity is a product of VFX work, but it turns out that the ferris wheel did really fall over during shooting.

Shazam! director David F. Sandberg shared on Instagram that he and his team actually destroyed a ferris wheel while making the movie. It probably would have been easy enough to simulate this destruction through CGI, but Shazam! instead went that practical route and toppled that monstrosity over. However, before the ferris wheel met its demise, Sandberg and cinematographer Maxime Alexandre took a ride on it as the rest of the crew looked on.

Destroying a ferris wheel is definitely going above and beyond the call of duty, but hey, if you have such an amusement park attraction at your disposal, then by all means, go for it! Of course, as you can see from the video, Shazam! didn't shoot this scene in an actual amusement park, but simply a lot laid out to look like one in an industrial area. One would imagine that even if David F. Sandberg had arranged to take a ferris wheel off an actual amusement park's hands, the logistics of destroying it on those grounds would be way too complicated to feasibly pull off. Better to simulate an amusement park instead.

As we saw in the latest Shazam! video, an amusement park won't be the only location where Shazam and Dr. Sivana will fight. They'll also take to the skies in a brutal brawl between skyscrapers that brings 2013's Man of Steel to mind. Of course, those who are familiar with the Shazam mythology know that usually Sivana's main weapon against the World's Mightiest Mortal is his mind, and that's still somewhat the case with Mark Strong's version. However, in the DC Extended Universe, Sivana encountered the mysterious Wizard as a child, but was rejected from becoming his champion, an honor Billy Batson would earn decades later. As a result, Sivana has turned to science as an adult to unlock the secrets of magic.

We don't know yet how Doctor Sivana will obtain special powers in Shazam!, but obviously it'll be bad for Billy Batson, as he's only just started getting the hang of his own abilities. Things will get even worse once the Seven Deadly Sins are awakened. Regardless, as the seventh DCEU installment, Shazam! is shaping up to an exciting superhero flick, though ferris wheel enthusiasts might want to close their eyes when the ride is destroyed during battle.

With the Disney/Fox merger on its way to completion it's only a matter of time before the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, right? While nothing official has been announced by Marvel Studios as far as how it will be handling the film rights returning home, the general consensus is that it's a matter of when, not if, the popular mutants get integrated into the existing film continuity. However, Sophie Turner, who plays Jean Grey in the current X-Men film franchise, isn't sure that the X-Men will work in the MCU as it currently exists. She fee;s the characters potentially add complex issues that don't currently exist in the massive franchise. According to Turner...

I don't know. I feel the complexities of the X-Men being shunned by society and segregated is not something that happens in the Avengers universe. Of course, I want to see them crossover but I don't think the themes through X-Men will collaborate well with the Avengers. It'll be very different. If they do it, I'd love to see how it turns out.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe films haven't completely avoided dealing with serious issues, it's certainly true that the X-Men's entire existence is built around the characters being outcasts within their own universe. The parallels between the X-Men and the racial segregation that was prevalent when the characters were being created was found early and they've been a stand-in for prejudice ever since.

Sophie Turner tells Newsweek that she doesn't see those themes playing well in the MCU, by saying the X-Men will be "very different" she seems to be saying she believes those aspects of the X-Men will be dropped.

It's certainly possible that she's right. The biggest issue may be the fact that, because the X-Men have not been part of the MCU to this point, there's been no indication that mutants exist in the current universe. If the Avengers were dedicated to fighting for justice in a world where an entire class of people was largely ostracized, you'd think it would have come up by now.

The big question is, how does Marvel Studios introduce the X-Men as characters that have apparently been existing for, at the very least, several years. Since the X-Men actors will be, at the very least, teenagers, then mutants have been around for at least as long as they have. Will mutants just be treated like they've always been there but just weren't important until now? It's possible that we might not see the X-Men actually join the MCU for a while so that Marvel can lay some groundwork to fit them into the story in a way that makes sense.

It's also possible that Marvel already has an easy answer to all this that will make everything work, and work quickly. Sophie Turner says she can't wait to see how it turns out, and certainly neither can we.

For the past few years, the trend of nostalgia has proven endlessly popular and profitable for the entertainment world. Disney has been capitalizing on this interest from the moviegoers, making live-action adaptations of their animated features. While moves like the upcoming Lion King movie show that it's not slowing down anytime soon, the House of Mouse is also breaking new ground with a Mary Poppins sequel, which is set to arrive this holiday season.

Mary Poppins Returns is the very first sequel to the 1964 classic movie, and will pick up on the Banks family, decades after Mary left them and flew back into the sky. Director Rob Marshall is diligently recreating the world of Cherry Tree Lane, and the upcoming movie will also contain new musical numbers, and even an animated sequence. Emily Blunt is playing the title character, recently explaining how the same animation was being used, saying:

It's all the hand-drawn animation, and they actually got these 90-year-old animators out of retirement. When you're doing those sequences, you're dancing with, like, a tennis ball or a very small dancer in a green-screen suit---like an adult dancer on his knees pretending to be a penguin.

Well, this is awesome. In addition to getting a peek behind the curtain, it looks like the original Mary Poppins animators worked on the highly anticipated sequel. The trailer briefly featured the return the dancing penguins, but this connection is something else.

Emily Blunt's comments come from her recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where the actress discussed all things Mary Poppins Returns. This included her animated musical number alongside the Banks children, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and assorted animated creatures. The scene is only briefly featured in the trailers for the upcoming sequel, but they look almost identical to the one Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke danced in all those years ago. And that's because it's the same minds at work for the new movie.

The recent interview also gives a glimpse into how CGI scenes are filmed on the set. Obviously there are no dancing penguins around, so it takes movie magic and some convincing performances to make Mary Poppins Returns' animated scenes function. Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda danced with tennis balls, imagining the colorful world around them.

One of the biggest questions around Mary Poppins Returns is how the musical numbers will compare to the 1964 original. Hairspray writer Marc Shaiman is composing the new songs, so there will be plenty of comparisons. And with tracks like "Let's Go Fly A Kite", "Feed The Birds" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" in the OG movie, there are some huge shoes to fill with the new soundtrack.

Helming a movie with live original music was quite the undertaking for Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, A Star is Born. With the vocal powerhouse/breakout actress Lady Gaga by his side, the pair tell an age-old love story in effortless harmony. According to director of photography Matthew Libatique, A Star is Born filmed a lot more footage than moviegoers were treated to, and an extended cut is in the works. In his words:

I think they're actually doing a new cut, a director's cut, and putting some stuff back in. I think there's always the concern about length, but, for him, I think it was mostly the concern about, 'When am I stepping outside the forward narrative of this love story, and when am I stepping outside the idea that you have one character ascending, another descending.' I think that's all he was doing when doing different cuts, is trying to find that soul.

In an interview with The Film Stage, Matthew Libatique explained how A Star is Born evolved throughout post-production with quite a few different cuts before reaching its theatrical release, running at about 2 hours and 16 minutes.

Because the film involved both dialogue and music sequences, they filmed a lot more movie then what audiences witnessed upon its release. In service of telling the core love story between Jackson Maine and Ally, Bradley Cooper ended up shaving it down to the movie's essence.

News of a director's cut has not been confirmed by Warner Bros., but considering the high-acclaim and box office records A Star is Born is receiving, this is a great idea for fans to experience the film in a new way. It could perhaps include some longer music sequences, or the addition of scenes previously cut out to keep the movie at a marketable length. The film had 10 major music sequences but a total of 19 songs on the soundtrack, including an extended version of the film's incredible closer "I'll Never Love Again."

A Star is Born is also a Oscars frontrunner for quite a few key awards this year including Best Picture, Lady Gaga for Best Actress, Bradley Cooper for Best Actor and Sam Elliott as Best Supporting Actor. Once award season dies down and people are ready to revisit the much buzzed-about romantic drama, a home release including a director's cut would fare quite well and give fans something new from the movie to look forward to.

One of the most enticing qualities of A Star is Born was getting to see Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper showcase an incredible musical and acting talent that they've never quite presented before. Having an encore for A Star is Born with additional sequences would deepen and enhance the film. For now the stunning theatrical cut is currently playing in theaters.
