Paul Rudd Talks About Filming That Hilarious Janet Van Dyne Scene From Ant-Man And The Wasp

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Ant-Man And The Wasp. If you have not yet seen the film, and don't wish to know major, important details about the ending, please bookmark this page and come back after your screening!Peyton Reed's Ant-Man And The Wasp is a film ultimately ripe with comedic premises -- from the nature of the ensemble of wacky heroes, to the funny applications of the unique power sets -- but one unexpected moment even allows for a bit of body swapping humor. Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) makes an attempt to reach out to her husband (Michael Douglas) and daughter (Evangeline Lilly) from the Quantum Realm, and the way she does it is by essentially possessing Scott Lang (Paul Rudd). It makes for a hilarious sequence, and it's one that I recently had the opportunity to ask the star about:

Late last month I took part in the domestic press day for Ant-Man And The Wasp in Pasadena, California, and during my interview with Paul Rudd I took the opportunity to ask about the scene where Scott Lang "channels" Janet. The actor smiled recounting the sequence, and acknowledged that the idea was kind of a "big swing" for the production, given that the silliness could have potentially undercut the emotionality. Still, he clearly had a lot of fun filming it on set with Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly, and revealed that they internally referred to it as the "All Of Me Scene" (a reference to the 1984 Carl Reiner comedy that has a character played by Steve Martin essentially possessed by the soul of the character played by Lily Tomlin).

The scene being discussed here is certainly one of the most inherently broad comedic sequences that we've seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it should be recognized that the larger tone of Ant-Man And The Wasp legitimizes it and makes it work. The blockbuster was specifically designed as a breath-of-fresh-air comedy after the hyper, large-scale drama featured in Avengers: Infinity War, and as a result a key moment where Scott Lang channels Janet Van Dyne very much fits in with the larger oeuvre. Like much of the film, it gets a hearty laugh (especially at the very end when Scott realizes that he's holding Hank Pym's hand), but it also drives the story forward to its exciting finale.

Ant-Man and the Wasp , which also stars Lawrence Fishburne, Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins, Randall Park, Michael Pena, and more, is now in theaters everywhere nationwide, and this is far from the end of our coverage. We have plenty more features and stories coming your way in the next few days, so be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend.

Crazy Rich Asians Constance Wu Has A Reason For Not Wanting To Join The Star Wars Franchise

Crazy Rich Asians Constance Wu Has A Reason For Not Wanting To Join The Star Wars Franchise

The Star Wars universe isn't going anywhere, with Episode IX, two original television shows from the upcoming streaming service Disney+, Rian Johnson's planned new trilogy and the film series from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss all on the way. However, you can rule out Crazy Rich Asians lead Constance Wu among the long line of actors eager to sign themselves up for a role for a chance to wield a lightsaber and rock space buns. Here's what Wu said:

I want to take roles that challenge me in different ways every year. I'm ready for something new, so thinking about that makes me feel like it's golden shackles.

It looks like the Force isn't with Constance Wu! It's not that the actress doesn't love the Star Wars franchise, she just doesn't want to tied to a long contract movie deal. She was asked by Rogue One's Jyn Erso herself during an episode of Variety's Actors on Actors starring Wu and Felicity Jones.

Before Star Wars fans write off Constance Wu, she did give some understandable reasons why she wouldn't be instantly attracted to working on a Star Wars film. She has been doing a lot of the same as Jessica Huang on ABC's comedy series Fresh Off the Boat for five seasons and is ready to regularly challenge herself with a mixture of roles.

Felicity Jones' Star Wars experience was an exception to the norm of the franchise, as Rogue One was a standalone film that pretty much hits the self-destruct button for potential sequels as the film closes. In the Variety interview, Jones expressed to Constance Wu about how she would love to play the part again and have the stability Wu has found on Fresh Off the Boat.

Constance Wu then back-tracked a bit, thinking back to her massive press junket for this summer's massive hit Crazy Rich Asians. Wu loved coming back to a familiar set of Fresh Off the Boat and appreciates the comfort of it.

She likely already has a franchise on her hands, since Crazy Rich Asians was the highest-grossing rom-com since 2009's The Proposal, just received two Golden Globe nominations (including a nod for Constance Wu for Best Actress in a Comedy) and has two sequels in the works for the characters based on novels by Kevin Kwan.

Crazy Rich Asians has been confirmed for a sequel, but it looks like Wu just hasn't gotten the official call yet, and director Jon M. Chu has In the Heights lined up to work on in 2019 first.

As far as Star Wars is concerned, pretty much anything is possible considering the franchises plans to go backwards and forwards in the timeline in their film and television show endeavors. Constance Wu could certainly find a short-lived role if she wanted to, and I think she would be a great fit for the franchise.

While Felicity Jones' chances of returning to Rogue One seem initially dim, her costar Diego Luna, who played Cassian Andor is getting a Disney+ series of his own, which precedes the Star Wars prequel even further. Maybe there's hope for Jyn Erso too?

The History Of Nudity In R-Rated Films

The History Of Nudity In R-Rated Films

This week sees the release of Chris Pine's new movie Outlaw King on Netflix, and while the film is getting middle of the road reviews in general, there's one thing about the movie that a lot of people are talking about. That one thing is Chris Pine's penis. Yes, while screen nudity is so common that it's hardly remarked upon in film, that's almost always female nudity that we're talking about. Male nudity is far rarer and is therefore much more controversial. Or is it that it's controversial, and therefore rarer?

Since the instituting of the Motion Picture Association of America's rating system in 1968, exactly what you can and can't show on screen, and who gets to see it if you do, is far more art than science. Quite often nudity, how much of it there was or exactly what the actor was doing while naked, was the determining factor in whether a movie received a wide release friendly R-rating or the dreaded NC-17 (or the X-rating that came before that).

Nudity, and the sex that often, but not always, comes with it, has a long and, mostly confusing, history on film. First, some background.

While nudity in one form or another has been part of film for as long as there's been film, the first instance of female nudity in a mainstream Hollywood movie is credited to Annette Kellerman in the 1916 movie A Daughter of the Gods. However, the Hayes Code which went into effect in the 1930s brought an end to on-screen nudity for decades. We didn't see it again until Jayne Mansfield in the 1963 film Promises! Promises!. The film was banned in some places, and released in an edited form without the three nude scenes in others.

It should be noted, the watershed moment almost came slightly sooner and with a much bigger name. Marilyn Monroe filmed a scene that would have had her skinny dipping for the 1962 comedy Something's Gotta Give, but Monroe was fired from the movie, and it was never completed. She then filmed another nude scene for The Misfits, but the scene was cut in editing due to adding nothing to the movie.

With 1968 would come the adoption of the MPAA rating system, which was an attempt to allow filmmakers to make the movies they wanted, with language, and violence and nudity if they so chose, while still preventing children from being exposed to material that was deemed inappropriate. With this came some sort of structure as it regards nudity in film and what was acceptable for whom, but the organization has never been entirely transparent and so we're left to guess based on the movies that we get what is acceptable and what is not. For example: Nudity associated with sex is sure to get you an R-rating, but nudity all by itself can be acceptable in PG-13 movies, like Titanic.

One of the first tests for the new system would come in 1969 with the British film Women in Love, which would include a naked male wrestling scene. While the homoerotic aspects of the sequence go without saying, it's not an overtly sexual scene and while the movie was banned in some counties because of the sequence, it doesn't appear there were any issues with the movie obtaining an R-rating.

In the early days, an X rating wasn't the box office poison that it later became. In the early 1970s, movies like Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange, and Last Tango in Paris were all initially released with X-ratings, though the former two later saw cuts that allowed for re-releasing as R-rated films so that they could reach wider audiences.

The Clockwork Orange re-cut only removes about a total of 30 seconds for a pair of sexually explicit scenes, (one an orgy, another a rape scene) which shows just how tenuous these changes could be. Neither of the scenes is really any different, just shorter, but that was apparently the difference for the MPAA.

Male nudity, while certainly not common in film, has become more common over the last couple of decades. The conventional wisdom was that male frontal nudity was a near guarantee that you'll find your movie with an NC-17 rating, but that doesn't really seem to be the case. While most major movies that have included male nudity in recent years (Wild Things, Jackass 3D) certainly had other reasons for their R-ratings, most of the movies that have had to fight to get an R-rating have involved female nudity.

In 1992 Basic Instinct was originally given an NC-17 rating. Again here, like A Clockwork Orange, only about 40 seconds worth of material was actually cut from the film. For the rest, director Paul Verhoeven says he used alternate camera angles of certain scenes to make the visuals less explicit. The famous scene of Sharon Stone uncrossing her legs sans underwear made it into the film unscathed. Even in a more modern era, however, not every movie bothers to push for an R-rating. 1995s Showgirls kept its NC-17, though R-rated versions do exist, and while the film was an overall box office bomb, Showgirls is one of the most financially successful NC-17s movies ever made.

Eyes Wide Shut was Stanley Kubrick's last movie, and it didn't make it to theaters without controversy. The masked orgy scene earned the film an NC-17 rating in its first try with the MPAA ratings board as well. Distributor Warner Bros., however, wanted to be sure the film obtained an R-rating, resulting in the studio taking a very unique step. Rather than actually cut anything out of the film, digital figures were added to the scene and placed in front of the most controversial moments, blocking them from the view of the theatre audience.

However, the bigger sex-related rating issue of 1999 was probably eventual Oscar winner Boys Don't Cry. The film has some graphic violence, including a rape and murder scene that had to be dealt with to avoid an NC-17 rating. However, one specific objection from a member of the MPAA was actually that a romantic sex scene between Hilary Swank and Chloe Sevigny which contained an orgasm that was simply "too long." It's as if to say, "That brutal murder scene is cool, but these naked people are having far too much fun."

The length of a sex scene would again be an issue in 2001 when Monster's Ball would have to cut about a minute of time from its emotionally powerful scene between Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton in order to obtain the R-rating it wanted.

In recent years, the MPAA has tried to make the rating system clearer to users by adding short descriptors to the standard rating so that people know exactly what sorts of material they will be getting. In 2010, this included the addition of a descriptor specifically for "male nudity" which came as a result of complaints the MPAA received by those who saw Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno, and were apparently unready to see a penis on screen. This addition did not change the descriptor as it relates to female nudity. It still just says "nudity."

But it's not only what's below the male waist that causes some to get concerned. The Ryan Gosling/Michelle Williams drama Blue Valentine initially received an NC-17 rating due to a scene where Gosling's character performs oral sex on Williams' character. The MPAA was criticized for the decision, vocally by Gosling, who claimed that had the genders been reversed there would have been no issue, showing an inappropriate bias on the part of the MPAA. The rating was appealed and Blue Valentine was released with an R-rating with no changes made.

Outlaw King has received an R-rating by the MPAA. As far as we're aware Chris Pine's nude scene is the only one in the movie, and it's bathing related, not sexual in nature. It's easy to wonder if there's a double standard going on in regards to nudity, but as the film is also about a rebellion against the English in 14th century Scotland, one assumes that the violence might be enough to earn the film the R-rating whether or not we saw Chirs Pine in the bath.

Nudity is always going to be a controversial topic, and the public perception of it will continue to change and evolve as culture does. While nudity between the sexes on screen is far from equal, it does seem like things are moving in a more equal direction. Certainly, there's no reason that one gender's nudity should be more acceptable than another's. Chris Pine doesn't think his penis is that big a deal, neither should we.

Is It Time For The Oscars To Bail On A Host? We Weigh In

Is It Time For The Oscars To Bail On A Host? We Weigh In

It took the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences longer than usual to find a host for this year Academy Awards ceremony. However, it lost him in record time. Kevin Hart has now said once and for all that he won't be hosting this year's show, and it seems all but confirmed at this point that this year's Oscars ceremony will go forward without a host at all. It will only be the sixth time in history the ceremony has had no host since it started in 1929.

But is this even a problem? Does the Oscars ceremony even need a host? Well, as is frequently the case, we here at CinemaBlend don't entirely agree on the answer to these questions. Sr. Movie Contributor Mike Reyes and myself, Dirk Libbey, are on opposite minds on the topic, and have broken down why we feel the show does, or does not, need a host.

DirkI've honestly been wondering for the last couple of years why the Oscars, or most award shows for that matter, even bother with a real host. What exactly do they do? They open the show with some sort of monologue or performance. They introduce some awards presenters, but rarely all of them. They throw in a couple of longer form comedy bits to keep the show from being an endless stream of awards. Then they say goodnight.

The fact is that we just don't need one person to do all of these things. Hosts are traditionally comedians and a monologue is the traditional form of opening the show. Is there no comedian who might be willing to do 7 minutes of standup about movies if they didn't have to host the whole show?

What's more, the show doesn't need to open with comedy. The best show opening of the last decade was when it opened with Justin Timberlake's performance of his Oscar-nominated song "Can't Stop the Feeling." It gave the show an insane amount of energy from the get go and didn't require the host to be involved at all.

The introduction of all presenters can simply be done by the in-theater announcer. Randy Thomas has been doing the job for nearly a decade and her voice has become iconic. Let her shine a bit more. She does most of that work already, to the point that when the host bothers to make an introduction, it's mostly an excuse just to get them back on screen.

The same goes for the comedy bits that get inserted into a show. They seem to mostly exist as an excuse to remind us that the show has a host. Sometimes the bits are actually funny, sometimes they fall flat, but does it really matter? The Academy Awards is a long-ass show and usually, around the time Jimmy Kimmel hijacks a bus full of tourists, I'm just ready for the show to end.

I'm also ready for the show to focus on film, not the host. The Academy Awards already has built-in entertainment if you want more than just awards. It's called the nominees for Best Original Song. Too often these songs get the short end of the stick, with performances being shortened or turned into a medley to make room for the other stuff that we just don't need. Make these moments the draw they should be. If you want more entertainment, let the orchestra in the building perform music from the Best Original Score nominees.

The Academy Awards is a celebration of film. The fact that we're even talking about the host is proof this is getting lost. The host's role simply isn't necessary and should be done away with.

MikeFor decades before the current climate, being an Oscar host was an honor and a privilege for those who would accept it. In its long storied history, there have been luminaries such as Bob Hope and Billy Crystal that held court over numerous ceremonies, with Johnny Carson, Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Martin AND Alec Baldwin, and Seth MacFarlane all making their own fantastic marks on the board.

Undoubtedly, the recent era of the Academy Awards has left it hard to find a host worth hiring and/or keeping around, and as such doubt has been cast on the institution of having a host in the first place. Some are probably thinking that since it worked for the Emmys, it can work for the Oscars. I believe this couldn't be further from the truth.

The position of Oscar host may be a thankless one in its darkest hours, but even then it is vital to the show. Much like any party, the Oscars need someone to glue the pieces together through schtick, set and maintain the tone for the evening's festivities, and smooth things out through the entire evening.

Without a host, the Oscar ceremony is chaos, and not a particularly interesting brand of chaos at that. I still think that the Academy should take some time off from telecasting the awards in order to work out the myriad of issues they have sitting in front of them. One of those problems is nailing down criteria for the perfect Oscar host.

This year's ceremony will be the ultimate test as to whether or not the Oscars can work without a central host. But from where I'm sitting, the most memorable moments from any of the Academy Awards ceremonies came from the central personality that was running the three-ring circus.

Let's not forget, the last time we had a hostless Oscars, back in 1989, the infamous Rob Lowe/Snow White opening was allowed to happen. Without that central personality of a host to work around, the producers are allowed to run the show. Given the choice between the host or the producers setting the tone, I'll trust a host any day of the week, because they know how to host.

Ships need captains, schools need teachers, and the Oscars needs a host or team of hosts. It's natural law.

So that's how we feel about it. Undoubtedly, how well this year's show goes without a host will go a long way in determining whether the Oscars goes host hunting in the future. Who do you agree with? Let us know in the poll down below.
