Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdoms Honest Trailer Goes In On Its Plot And Character Changes
The Jurassic Park trilogy concluded on a mixed note in 2001, but over a decade later, Universal relaunched the franchise with Jurassic World, which collected over $1.6 billion worldwide. With numbers like that, it's no wonder a sequel was ordered, and sure enough, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom also a financial success, surpassing $1.3 billion worldwide. Critically, on the other hand, Fallen Kingdom was not as well received as its predecessor, and now that the sequel is available on home media, the folks over at Honest Trailers have taken it upon themselves to tear into the movies plot and character issues.
This latest Honest Trailer doesn't hold back on its contempt for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, declaring it to be the stupidest of the franchise, which is saying a lot since Jurassic Park III is also on that list. Starting off, the Screen Junkies video notes how Fallen Kingdom rehashes plot points we've already seen in previous installments, namely how a park built to contain dinosaurs on an island is being destroyed. Except this time it's going to stick since the erupting volcano will wipe out everything in its path... which you'd think might have given these billionaires pause when they thinking about setting up shop on Isla Nublar.
But then we get to the flip-flopping character characterizations of our main Jurassic World protagonists, Claire Dearing and Owen Grady. In stark contrast to how they were depicted previously, Claire is now the one who cares about the dinosaurs and Owen is the cold-hearted one. The video notes how there isn't any explanation provided for why they're so different, although where Claire is concerned, presumably her work with the Dinosaur Protection Group softened her up.
This is just the tip of the iceberg with Honest Trailers' critique of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, as it also brings up how the sequel also suffers from its supporting cast (a.k.a. the "dinguses"), some of the dinosaurs' cartoonish antics and once again relying on a hybrid dinosaur as the main monster. However, despite all of the faults that Fallen Kingdom has, its box office performance shows that people are still enamored with this franchise. So even though Fallen Kingdom ends up being way too much like The Lost World: Jurassic Park, these movies aren't going anywhere. Isla Nublar is toast, but thanks to Maisie Lockwood freeing the surviving dinosaurs, they're now running/flying free on the mainland. Jurassic World: Dawn of the Planet of the Dinosaurs anyone?
