Dwayne Johnson Teases Black Adams Superhero Cameos
Some big things are brewing over in the DCEU. In addition to the debut of Zachary Levi in David F. Sandberg's Shazam!, there's also the solo Black Adam movie starring Dwayne Johnson that has been in development for quite some time. The film hasn't taken many notable steps forward recently, but Johnson recently addressed the film's cast and noted that we might actually see other DC superheroes show up in cameo roles. The Skyscraper star explained:
Without giving anything away, there might be maybe a cameo or two of some of the other DC superheroes. We'll see. That's been the beauty of Black Adam as we've been developing it is that we could make a movie that just stood on its own too as well, but that's also the beauty of those universes coming together at DC.
So, the main idea here seems to be that Dwayne Johnson wants to make his Black Adam movie a standalone adventure. That said, per the actor's remarks during his recent interview with Filmstarts, he recognizes the benefits of an interconnected universe like the DCEU, so he sees the potential for DC heroes to show up and play roles in the story.
This raises the question of which heroes could conceivably show up in a Black Adam solo movie. One obvious choice is Shazam himself, as the two are arch nemeses, while other options include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, or even a hero who has yet to actually premiere in the DCEU -- such as Nightwing or Batgirl.
It's not necessarily surprising that The Rock would have the ability to get more movie stars over to his particular film. The wrestler-turned-actor has handily become one of the most bankable performers in Hollywood, and his power has helped boost a large number of franchises like Jumanji and G.I. Joe. Beyond that, he is already gearing up for a spinoff of the Fast and Furious franchise with Jason Statham, and the Hobbs and Shaw spinoff recently cast Idris Elba as its main villain. In layperson's terms, the guy has his hands in a lot of different franchises, and he can get talent from all over if he wants it.
With all of that said, we're still left to wonder what a Black Adam movie could look like. Even with the release of Suicide Squad back in 2016, the DCEU hasn't given many supervillains that much room to take center stage and front their own solo movies, though some other projects in development echo the style of Black Adam. This could be a groundbreaking move for DC if it works and bringing other DC heroes into the fold could represent a vital step towards making sure that it works.
