First Man Trailer: Ryan Goslings New Movie Looks Exciting And Out Of This World
Last year, Ryan Gosling left his imprint on the big screen in two significantly different ways. First he played BV in Terrence Malick's romanic drama Song to Song, and then he played Agent K, a replicant LAPD officer in Blade Runner 2049. Gosling only has one theatrical appearance lined up this year, but it's a big one, as he's portraying famed astronaut Neil Armstrong in First Man. Now the movie's first trailer has finally arrived, and this footage presents it as an exciting ride.
Having already worked with Damian Chazelle on La La Land, Ryan Gosling's re-teaming with the director for First Man. Gosling's played a lot of different roles over his 20+ years of acting, but First Man marks the first time he's portraying a real life figure in a movie. As one might surmise from a movie with Neil Armstrong as the main character, First Man will chronicle the events leading up to the moon landing in 1969. However, rather than feeling like a traditional biopic, screenwriter Josh Singer described First Man as "100 percent a mission movie" earlier this year to The Boston Globe, saying that it boasts five major action set pieces. Going off this trailer, it definitely looks like there won't be any shortage of thrills.
The moon landing was one of humanity's greatest triumphs of the 20th century, but as the First Man trailer shows us, getting there was incredibly difficult. Between numerous technological developments and the many dangers facing these astronauts (some of whom did die), more things could have gone wrong than right with getting a few men to the moon. But as Ryan Gosling's Neil Armstrong, he has every intention of returning home. We know he and his crew-mates survived the experience, but nonetheless, this preview does a good job of making us worry about how their trip to Earth's natural satellite will turn out.
Besides Ryan Gosling leading the charge, First Man boasts a solid lineup of players, with notable cast members including Claire Foy as Janet Sharon, Neil Armstrong's first wife; Corey Stoll as Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the Apollo 11 mission; Kyle Chandler as Deke Slayton, NASA's first Chief of the Astronaut Office; Jason Clarke as Ed White, the first American to walk in space who was later killed during the failed pre-launch test of the first Apollo mission; Shea Whigham as Gus Grissom, one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts who also died during the Apollo 1 test; Cory Michael Smith as Roger B. Chaffee, the third casualty of the Apollo 1 tragedy; and Lukas Haas as Michael Collins, the Apollo 11 Command Module pilot.
