How Avengers 4 Fits With Avengers: Infinity War, According To The Writers

Needless to say, there will be spoilers in this article, so stop reading now if you want to go into Avengers: Infinity War knowing nothing.

Because next year's Avengers 4 remains such a mystery, there are huge questions tied to Avengers: Infinity War that we can not wait to have answered. Which heroes will still be alive to defend our precious planet? Is Thanos' arc still going to be a factor? And is it possible that Avengers: Infinity War ends on a massive cliffhanger, asking audiences to come back the following summer to see how it's resolved? When we visited the set of Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War, we asked longtime Marvel screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely how they viewed the two movies, and whether they thought of them as one massive story, or two separate tales. They replied:

Christopher Markus: Both.Stephen McFeely: Can't have the second one without the first one. But our hope is that it's breakfast, and then lunch.Markus: It does not feel like you hit pause, and then unpaused it. It is two very different [movies].

At the time that we visited the Avengers: Infinity War set, both movies were being shot at the same time, so there was a fair amount of hedging from the screenwriters about what they could reveal, and what might be being saved for next summer's Avengers 4. After listening to them hash out the distinction between the movies, I'm more confident that somewhere in the process of filming Infinity War, the screenwriters and their co-directors -- who all collaborated on Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War -- found a natural stopping point, and that Avengers 4 was shaped to be a pure follow up to whatever happens at the conclusion of Infinity War.

The one wrinkle in that plan happens to be the two movies that happen between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. However, since visiting the set of Joe and Anthony Russo's blockbuster, we have learned that both Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel will be stories set in different eras of the MCU, so continuity can be preserved from when Infinity War ends and Avengers 4 picks back up in May 2019.

Now, if only we knew that Avengers 4 title.

Avengers: Infinity War will find the major heroes of the MCU teaming up to defeat Thanos (Josh Brolin), a mad despot hellbent on acquiring all of the Infinity Stones and bringing balance to the universe... by eliminating half of the galaxy. The summer season may be coming to a close, but not without a standing ovation - particularly in thanks to the continued success of Crazy Rich Asians. After holding at the top after its second weekend, only dropping five percent from three day debut (which is practically unheard of), it's safe to say the romantic comedy is a real hit. A success story wouldn't be complete with some roadblocks, though, and Crazy Rich Asians is no exception. Director Jon M. Chu was originally told that he should change the title of the film, recently saying,

People wanted to change the title of the movie. But the book is called Crazy Rich Asians, a provocative title. I think it creates conversation, which I think is good.

The title certainly stood out to avid book readers, as the novel the movie was adapted from was a New York Times bestseller, written by Kevin Kwan. Obviously going for a different title wouldn't have as clearly tipped fans of the book that the movie was an adaptation. In the interview with Yahoo, Jon M. Chu explained how the name is important to him because it starts conversations and grabs attention. The Hollywood movie is the first in 25 years to be comprised of an all-Asian cast, and offers various depictions of Asian people not tackled before on screen. It's impactful and rare this film is to Hollywood and for the visibility of the Asian community and being titled Crazy Rich Asians lets it be very forthright with its mission.

While Jon M. Chu found the possible name change of the film ridiculous, what was even more ridiculous was the claim that an all-Asian cast who could deliver was unobtainable. Chu admitted that they had to look a bit harder than usual to find the talented ensemble cast of Crazy Rich Asians, but the actors they found were pros who had already done the work needed to star in a blockbuster rom com. The cast just needed an opportunity; there was no lack of talent out there. Thanks to the persistence of Chu and the filmmakers involved, actors such as Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Awkwafina among many were given unique roles in a hit film unlike any that had ever been offered to them before.

it should be noted that the provocative title hasn't been adopted worldwide. According to Inverse, posters in Germany title the film Crazy Rich, and in Italy it's called Crazy & Rich. Guesses are that a decision was made that the full title in some places overseas wouldn't be as marketable for audiences, but the reason isn't clear. Crazy Rich Asians hasn't seen a wide worldwide release just yet, with it being currently available in just a few other countries.

Deadpool 2 has some great moments, but the absolute funniest might be the scene early in the film where Deadpool arrives at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. It contains a fantastic cameo by the entire current cast of the mainline X-Men movies. It's one of the funniest cameos in the film, mostly because it's pretty surprising to see. It turns out the actors were pretty surprised to see it as well, as most of them thought the scene they were filming was meant for the end credits. According to Evan Peters who plays Quicksilver...

We did a bunch of different versions, some not PG, and they ended up using that one. I thought it was going to be for the end credits -- and I think everybody kinda did -- but it ended up being like, boom, right there sort of in the first half of the film. Which was really sort of weird and shocking.

The reason that Evan Peters, and apparently the rest of the actors didn't realize what they were filming is because, as we had learned previously, they weren't actually on the set with Ryan Reynolds at any point. The scene of the X-Men was shot on the set of X-Men: Dark Phoenix and then digitally inserted into Deadpool 2. The actors apparently didn't know what was happening outside their shot. Perhaps since they knew they weren't going to be a larger part of the movie, they thought the scene was meant as a post-credits scene where it would exist out of context just for the laugh. Peters tells ET Online there were multiple versions of the scene; hopefully, we'll see them in a future Blu-ray release.

In fact, the scene comes fairly early in Deadpool 2 after the Merc with a Mouth has attempted to blow himself to pieces. Colossus brings the pieces back to the X-Mansion to rehab and Deadpool, as he did in the previous film, makes jokes about how empty the school is. The camera then cuts to a new angle that shows all of the current X-Men, from Quicksilver to Beast and more, in a room behind Deadpool. They notice him, and they quietly shut the door before he notices they are there.

And it makes sense that a cameo like this could have been part of the post-credits scenes. It's a pretty big moment in the film and quite often laughs like that are left for the credits. Of Course, Deadpool 2 had other plans when it came to what it did during the credits.

While Deadpool will never be one of the X-Men, he started up his own X-team in Deadpool 2. This will lead to the X-Force movie that is set to take place down the line. A larger team movie means a bigger budget, which in turn could mean future cameos for the X-Men. Perhaps we'll see these two teams working together down the road.

In 1997, only five years after he debuted in Image Comics, Spawn starred in his own movie, but unlike his comic book adventures, the demonic character's theatrical tale was met with critical derision. Fortunately, Spawn will be getting a shot at cinematic redemption, as last year, following nearly a decade of development, creator Todd McFarlane announced that an R-rated reboot that he will direct is in the works at Blumhouse Productions. In the months since, we've slowly learned how this new Spawn movie will be different from its predecessor, but today brings work that the reboot may have finally found its lead, and it's someone who already has a little comic book movie experience under his belt: Jamie Foxx.

This isn't the first time that Jamie Foxx's name has been connected to a new Spawn movie. Back in 2013, the actor expressed interest in playing Al Simmons, and five years later, That Hashtag Show is reporting that Foxx has been offered the role, which was previously played by Michael Jai White. However, Foxx hasn't signed on to the Spawn reboot yet, and his involvement may hinder on how quickly the project moves forward. Supposedly production is set to begin this August, with Todd McFarlane hoping for Spawn to come out sometime in 2019. So perhaps if Spawn can get off the ground sooner rather than later, Foxx will be willing to participate.

If Jamie Foxx does play Spawn, this will be his second time performing in a comic book movie, as he previously played Max Dillon, a.k.a. Electro, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. His other recent credits include the Horrible Bosses movies, Django Unchained, White House Down and Baby Driver. Later this year he'll be seen as Little John in Robin Hood, and he's also hosting Beat Shazam over at Fox. Foxx is a talented performer, but the fact that he was so enthusiastic about playing Spawn half a decade ago suggests that if he accepts the role for this reboot, we're in for a treat.

Rather than follow the same path as the 1997 movie and place Al Simmons front and center, the Spawn reboot is taking a different approach with featuring the eponymous character that doesn't involve exploring his origin story. Longtime fans of the Spawn mythology are familiar with detectives Sam Burke and Maximillian "Twitch" Williams, who started out as supporting characters in Spawn's comic book and became so popular that they were given their own book. While we won't see these two together in the upcoming movie, Todd McFarlane revealed that Twitch will be the other main character, as he and his yet-to-be-revealed female partner will cross paths with the demonic protagonist. As for Spawn, although he won't speak like a normal human, he will communicate in a special way.
